The Harold F. and Sara L. McDonald Endowment for Excellence in Oncology was established in 2012 by their children, Linda McDonald Rowe, Kathleen Herman and John McDonald, D.D.S., in memory of their father and to honor their mother Sara McDonald.
Sara McDonald, known as “Sally” to her friends and family, passed away on August 30, 2014.
A warm and charming woman, Sara was a devoted wife who gave love, strength and support to her husband and children in all of their endeavors.
Her can-do, positive fighting spirit was an inspiration for her family’s endowment to support cancer research in order to beat cancer.
When Harold McDonald was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer, rather than “just get his affairs in order” as was suggested, he decided to fight the disease. With treatment at the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio, he was able to spend more quality time with his family and participated in many activities including walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.
The family really came to appreciate the hematology/oncology fellows who were involved in Harold’s treatment
Sara McDonald said “We want to support the research of these brilliant and immensely talented young doctors so they may apply their strengths in their quest for discovery in cancer research giving them the opportunity to touch the lives of thousands.
