Dr. Leonard Lawrence Endowed Scholarship

The Dr. Leonard Lawrence Endowed Scholarship was established in 2022 by Dr. Jerry Webb, Dr. Oliver Hunter III, Dr. Michael Morgan, Dr. Adrian Jessie and Dr. Eva Mason in honor of Dr. Lawrence, former Associate Dean Of Student Affairs and Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.

A distinguished physician, leader, and mentor to countless students, this scholarship reflects Dr. Lawrence’s commitment to promoting diversity, connecting students from communities historically underrepresented in higher education with mentors, and helping them succeed in medical school and throughout their careers. The scholarship will be awarded to a medical student who is a member of The Student National Medical Association (UT Health San Antonio Chapter).

Dr. Lawrence served in the U.S. Air Force before joining the medical school faculty as Assisstant Professor in 1972 and later as Associate Dean of Student Affairs in 1981, serving in that role until his retirement in 2005. Dr. Lawrence retired as Tenured Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Family and Community Medicine in 2005. He served as a member of numerous organizations including as the 92nd President of the National Medical Association (NMA) from 1993 to 1994. He also served as past Chairperson of the Group on Student Affairs (GSA) Minority Affairs Section of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). He was awarded the AAMC Minority Affairs Distinguished Service Award for his leadership.
