The Dr. Karin Barnes leadership endowment fund in Occupational Therapy (OT) supports students in the department of Occupational Therapy in the School of Health Professions with a special interest in leadership activity on a city, state and national level.
This special fund will directly support OT students working in medically underserved areas and with at-risk populations in Texas. Their contributions to research and public health in these critical areas are made possible thanks to the generosity of donors who have invested in the next generation of OT professionals through the leadership endowment.
Dr. Barnes became a founding member of the Occupational Therapy education program in 1981. In addition to her commitment to teaching, she has been an unwavering leader and champion of the department. In the 10 years she served as the Chair of the department, the Occupational Therapy program grew in national prominence and she was awarded a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support the development of OT students who are committed to serving children with disabilities.
In April 2017, Dr. Karin Barnes was inducted as a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and was recognized for her contributions to the education, scholarship and service to the Occupational Therapy profession.
