Dr. Valerie Lawrence, unexpectedly passed away in her sleep in Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday, July 16, 2016. Dr. Lawrence was a member of the UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine faculty from 1984 to the time of her passing, rising from the rank of Instructor to Professor with Tenure and, upon her retirement in 2013, was honored with promotion to the rank of Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Lawrence will be remembered for her seminal contributions and leadership in the field of perioperative medicine; her sustained productivity in teaching, research, and scholarly activity; her excellence as a role model and mentor for students, residents, and faculty; and her outstanding service contributions to the Department of Medicine and the University as well as the South Texas Veterans Health System, where she served as a physician and health services researcher. She will be greatly missed.
