Podiatry at UT Health San Antonio has a rich history of care for the diabetic foot, research, education, and global leadership. The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency program is one of the oldest in the United States.
An estimated 15.5% of adults living in Bexar County have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, one of the highest rates in the country. Foot complications are a frequent and costly occurrence and can lead to amputations. The mortality rate after a major limb loss is reported to be as high as 70% in 5 years. The Division of Podiatry strives to meet UT Health San Antonio’s mission “We Make Lives Better” by preventing amputations in diabetes and preserving the mobility and independence of our patients. Saving limbs is saving lives.
