Dr. Peter M. Loomer Endowment for Dental Faculty Excellence

The Dr. Peter M. Loomer Endowment for Dental Faculty Excellence was created to support faculty in the School of Dentistry at UT Health San Antonio by facilitating 1) faculty development awards and 2) research awards on an every other year rotational basis beginning with faculty development.

Dr. Loomer is Professor and Dean of the School of Dentistry since February 1, 2019. He is a former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. He also served as the founding director of the NYC Center for Global Oral Health and was faculty in the New York University College of Global Public Health. Prior to NYU, he served as faculty for 16 years at the University of California San Francisco, where he had many roles (Pre-doctor and Postgraduate Program Directors of Periodontics, Director of Clinical Operations, T32 Director of short-term research training; etc.)

He is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he obtained his BSc, DDS, PhD (Biochemistry/Microbiology) and dentistry specialty training in Periodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, Fellow of the American College of Dentists and Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.

Over the past 25 years, his research has focused on bone physiology, from evaluating the effects of microgravity (having conducted experiments aboard the space shuttle) to the influence of the oral microbiome and tobacco on periodontal bone regeneration. Dr. Loomer is an expert in health professions curriculum, which has been a major focus of his international research program.

His work in global oral health has focused on development of the health care workforce and improving oral health of underserved populations in developing nations with an emphasis on East and West Africa, the gulf states of the middle east and Latin America. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Forgarty International, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and others.
