Scientists in the Department of Biochemistry work at the interface between molecular structures and cell, tissue, and organ function to probe the essential molecular mechanisms of life and disease. Research in the labs of our 26 primary faculty (17 tenure and 9 research track), and 17 adjunct and cross-appointed faculty, spans many disciplines including: cancer, neuroscience, cell signaling, enzymology and metabolic regulation, molecular structure and dynamics, and proteomics and metabolomics. Our goal is to seek an understanding, at the molecular and structural level, of how complex biological systems work. This understanding enables us to design new approaches to treating disease, and this has been recently enhanced through creation of a Center for Innovative Drug Discovery in the Department of Biochemistry, in collaboration with our partners in the Chemistry Department at UTSA. This now provides the means for translation of our discoveries made in the lab to bedside applications. In addition to our research mission, the faculty members in the Department of Biochemistry are dedicated to the training of future scientists at the postdoctoral, graduate, and professional student (both medical and dental) level.
