Department of Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine (EM) is a distinct specialty that focuses on the initial evaluation, diagnosis, resuscitation, and stabilization of patients with acute illness and injury. In addition, the EM physician functions as the leader of all multidisciplinary physician resuscitation teams that provide care for critically ill or injured patients in the Emergency Department. Emergency Medicine became the 23rd recognized specialty in 1979. There are at least seven recognized areas of specialized expertise separating the EM specialist from other disciplines:

  • Global Health
  • Toxicology
  • EMS
  • Disaster Medicine
  • Environmental Emergencies
  • Wilderness and Survival Medicine
  • Clinical Ultrasound

If you have any questions, please contact Camille Ayala, Development Coordinator, by email or by phone at (210) 567-5311.
