Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine (EM) is a distinct speciality that focuses on the initial evaluation, diagnosis, resuscitation, and stabilization of patients with acute illness and injury. In addition, the EM physician functions as the leader of all multidisciplinary physician resuscitation teams that provide care for critically ill or injured patients in the Emergency Department. Emergency Medicine became the 23rd recognized speciality in 1979. There are at least seven recognized areas of specialized expertise separating the EM specialist from other disciplines:

  • Resuscitation
  • Toxicology
  • EMS systems design and supervision
  • Disaster management / mass gathering
  • Environmental emergencies
  • Acute pain management
