David J. Jones, Ph.D., professor of anesthesiology and senior associate dean for admissions in the School of Medicine, retired August 31, 2015 after 41 years of service to the UT Health San Antonio.
He held a secondary appointment in pharmacology and in 1999, after a couple of years of interviewing student candidates for the School of Medicine, Dr. Jones became formally involved in the school’s admissions activity. More than 3,000 students were admitted to the School of Medicine on Dr. Jones’ watch.
In the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Jones had a very active research laboratory for 25 years studying spinal cord nerve-signaling pathways. He gave up the research to assume his responsibilities in the dean’s office.
To the admissions process Dr. Jones brought the perspective of being a Ph.D. scientist in a clinical department. “I taught medical and dental students and residents in anesthesiology, so I had a perspective of medical education from their entry into medical school until their postgraduate education,” he said.
Because of his relationship with his students, Dr. Jones and his wife, Jody, made a commitment to support the School of Medicine’s advising system, Veritas. The system’s goal is to enhance the development of medical students by fostering close relationships and assisting them to make career decisions and access resources in an informed way.
