The Rudy and Barbara Gomez Nursing Technology and Education Endowment honors Mr. Rudolph “Rudy” Gomez, who retired from the School of Nursing at UT Health San Antonio following 41 stellar years of distinguished service to the school. To date, he is the only employee to serve in a single school for four decades at UT Health San Antonio.
In 1973, Mr. Gomez was hired by then Interim Dean, Dr. Dolores Corona, and was quickly promoted within the school’s ranks. He served in a variety of positions, including Audio Technologist, Audio Visual Education Specialist, Supervisor for Audio Visual Service, Administrative Assistant, and Assistant to the Dean of the School of Nursing. He served four deans between 1983 and 2008: Dr. Patty Hawken, Dr. Janet Allen, Dr. Colleen Keller (interim), and Dr. Robin Froman. Mr. Gomez’s robust career with the School of Nursing culminated with his appointment to Associate Dean for Finance and Administration by Dr. Eileen Breslin.
Mrs. Gomez’s driving force was instrumental to Mr. Gomez’s commitment to excellence, and his contributions to state-of-the-art technological enhancements in the school will continue as we establish the Rudy and Barbara Gomez Nursing Technology and Education Endowment in the School of Nursing. This endowment will not only provide the School of Nursing with funding to secure the latest, most innovative technological resources to enhance student education outcomes, but will be used to support educational programming related to dementia to benefit the community (e.g., the Caring for the Caregiver program) as it honors Mr. and Mrs. Gomez in perpetuity for generations to come.
