Dr. Howard Stanley McGuff passed away August 5, 2020 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on June 15, 1951 in Warner Robbins, Georgia and grew up in North Carolina, Hawaii, and San Antonio, Texas. After graduation from St. Mary’s University, Dr. McGuff received his D.D.S. degree at UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry, graduating in the class of 1977. He served our country as an Air Force dentist and then practiced dentistry for seven years. Stan returned to UT Health San Antonio to complete a residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology and a fellowship in head and neck pathology.
Dr. McGuff was a much-loved professor in the UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for over 30 years. Stan was devoted to each student under his tutelage and will continue to be greatly respected by his peers for his expertise in the fields of both oral and maxillofacial pathology and head and neck pathology. He was a humble, gentle and caring husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew him.
The McGuff Award will be given to an exceptional senior dental student, at the senior banquet and awards ceremony, who has best demonstrated remarkable integration of oral and maxillofacial pathology into the practice of general dentistry. The recipient will receive a plaque, a monetary award, a certificate of achievement from the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and their name placed on a plaque in the glass enclosure in the hallway by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
