The Mary Faye Montgomery Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2005 by her husband, William (“Bill”) Montgomery. This endowed scholarship supports nursing students who are enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing program. Applicants go through a rigorous screening process to ensure that the recipients are highly motivated and financially deserving.
Mary “Faye” Hicks Montgomery was a truly special and remarkable person. She was the wife of Bill, the mother of two daughters, the sister of five siblings, “Gran” to four grandchildren and a friend to many. Faye received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Sacred Heart Dominican College, St. Joseph’s Department of Nursing, in Houston and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Faye was passionate about teaching nursing students the skills necessary to be highly competent and compassionate professional caregivers. She was dedicated to teaching future nurses at The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing where she was a nursing instructor in the Clinical Skills Lab from 1991 to 2002. Faye was also an accomplished artist and her calligraphy of the Nurse’s Creed, written by the first Dean of the UT Health Science Center's School of Nursing, Dr. Margaretta Styles, is on display at the School of Nursing. Faye was an avid jogger and loved spending time in nature. She died on January 10, 2005 of complications related to mesothelioma.
