Sam Barshop

Sam Barshop, renowned businessman and former Regent of The University of Texas System, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. Mr. Barshop was the founder of La Quinta Inn Inc. and an Emeritus Member of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio Development Board. He was also a member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Mr. Barshop was a graduate of the Texas Military Institute and The University of Texas at Austin. He received The University of Texas Ex-Student’s Association Distinguished Alumnus Award and was a member of the UT-Austin College of Business Administration Hall of Fame.

Sam and his wife, Ann, were dedicated to higher education and medical research. In 2001, they established The Sam and Ann Barshop Center for Longevity and Aging Studies at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio through a generous gift of $4 million. The Barshop Institute is recognized as one of the most successful research programs in aging in the world.

Gifts to the UT Health Science Center San Antonio in memory of Sam Barshop will benefit the Sam Barshop Memorial Research Fund and will be used to advance scientific discovery in the biology of aging at the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies.
