The Margret "Bobbe" Gaskin Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 by Bobbe’s loving children, Lynda and Carl Larsen, and Polly Davenport. Her daughter, Polly, is an alumna of the UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing and remembers fondly when her mother convinced her to become a nurse. Bobbe had many friends who were nurses and knew then what an important and rewarding profession nursing could be.
This endowed scholarship supports graduate nursing students who enroll in the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. Applicants go through a rigorous screening process to ensure that the recipients are highly motivated and financially deserving.
Bobbe never met a stranger and loved getting to know everyone she encountered. She was an avid golfer and understood the importance of staying active to remain healthy. In fact, at the age of 75, while enduring a chronic illness, she joined the Blue Bird Auxiliary at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. For several years she volunteered most often in the escort department so that she could assist patients out of the hospital door and hopefully back to good health.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and encouraged all of her loved ones to further their education to the greatest extent. It is with this in mind that this scholarship will be awarded to graduate nurses continuing to achieve at the highest levels of nursing education.
Bobbe Gaskin, gone but never to be forgotten, died on July 11, 2014. She was surrounded by her loving family while receiving care from several very compassionate nurses, who may hopefully benefit from the Margret “Bobbe” Gaskin Memorial Endowed Scholarship someday.
