On August 27, 2019, we lost a dedicated and respected faculty physician, Dr. Alfonso “Chico” Chiscano. The Cardiothoracic Research Professorship in Honor of Alfonso Chiscano, M.D. is one way to keep his memory close to our hearts. Gifts made to this professorship will support research in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UT Health San Antonio.
Dr. Chiscano studied at the German School, Escuelas Pia in Tenerife, the Jesuit School in Madrid, and the National Institute of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He received his medical degree in 1962 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona.
From 1962 to 1969, Dr. Chiscano was a general surgery resident at Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. He later earned the specialty of Cardiothoracic Surgery from the same institution in 1971. Later that year, he moved to Houston, Texas to work directly under the supervision of Dr. Denton Cooley, a worldwide renowned cardiothoracic surgeon.
In 1972, Dr. Chiscano began his own private practice as a Cardiac surgeon in San Antonio, Texas. He and his team performed surgery to more than 6,000 patients. Upon his retirement from active private practice about 10 years ago, he joined our faculty as a Clinical Professor. He served as a senior member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery and American College of Cardiology, he was a past member of the American Medical Association, a senior member of the Texas Medical Association and the Bexar County Medical Society, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
