The mission of the Department of Pathology is to provide state-of-the art expertise in the educational, clinical care, and research areas of the Health Science Center and beyond. The department consists of 40 full and part-time faculty, 16 residents, and five Fellows. The department provides educational opportunities for students in the Medical, Dental, Health Professions, and Graduate Schools. Faculty members in the department have been recognized by the Health Science Center and UT System as Distinguished Teaching Faculty. Our faculty have performed educational research which has been published in peer reviewed journals and which has been used to improve the educational performance of our students. Pathology as a discipline occupies a critical position in medicine that bridges basic science and clinical diagnostics. Clinical activities of the faculty are performed at University Hospital and in the South Texas Reference Laboratories. Our faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise in general and organ specific diagnostic pathology. The research activities of the department are supported through extramural funding. Research activities include translational studies of breast and prostate cancer and ongoing basic and translational studies of hematological malignancies, cellular injury and death, and molecular cytogenetics.
