Jeffrey J. Meffert, M.D., clinical associate professor and residency program director in the Division of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, passed away on December 5, 2016 at the age of 60.
He was born in Okinawa, Japan to a military family. He graduated from John Marshall High School in San Antonio, earned a bachelor’s degree at Rice University, and his medical degree from UT Health San Antonio, where he graduated in 1981.
After completing his residency, he went on active duty in the U.S. Air Force from 1984 to 1992. He practiced family medicine and flight medicine before completing an Air Force residency in dermatology. He retired as a Colonel in 2006.
After a few years in private practice, Dr. Meffert joined the faculty at UT Health San Antonio, eventually becoming the Program Director in 2012. He was a most treasured and experienced Dermatologist, loved by his patients, residents, and his colleagues.
He was a very influential leader in Dermatology; serving as President of the Association of Military Dermatologists and as President of the San Antonio Dermatological Society. He served on the Risk Management task force, the Bioterrorism and Natural Disaster task force, the Patient Advocacy committee for the American Academy of Dermatology, and in several capacities for the Bexar County Medical Society.
