Ed and Linda Whitacre

A $1 million gift from Ed and Linda Whitacre will support the pilot cancer therapeutic clinical trials program at the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) as well as fund an education and awareness campaign to highlight the clinical trials and expertise available to patients battling cancer.

Ian M. Thompson Jr., M.D.

When the doctor becomes the patient

What goes through the mind of a cancer doctor who learns he has cancer? Ian M. Thompson Jr., M.D., director of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center, wasn’t as worried as was his wife, Donna, about the odd spot on his right ear. In reality, he didn’t have to go too far.

CTRC Foundation

CTRC Foundation gives $10.2 million for cancer research

The CTRC Foundation is stemming the tide of this deadly disease with a transformational $10.2 million gift to the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, to advance and expand cancer research and care.

Larry Hedtke

Hard-working Karnes City rancher, Larry Hedtke, 65, had undergone chemotherapy, surgery and even a stem cell transplant. Nut none could stop his deadly multiple myeloma from recurring. Then his doctor suggested he enroll in a clinical trial at the Cancer Therapy & Reasearch Center of a drug called carfilzomib, and in January 2014, Hedtke joined the study through the CTRC’s Institute for Drug Development.

Today, Hedtke reports he is feeling great and closer to normal.

Survivor + Activist = Philanthropist

Annabelle Jones

In the summer of 1989 Annabelle Jones’ spirit was tested when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Bravely, Jones beat breast cancer and believes research at the CTRC played a major role in her survival. Most recently, she made the decision to endow the CTRC with a bequest through her will to be used for breast cancer research.

Family’s goal is to beat cancer

Harold and Sara McDonald

When Harold McDonald was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer, rather than “just get his affairs in order” as was suggested, he decided to fight the disease. With treatment at the CTRC, he was able to spend more quality time with his family and participated in many activities including walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.
