Zulema "Sue" Thurman Memorial Fund
At age 90, Sue Thurman passed away on Monday, December 26, 2011 in San Antonio while residing at the Arden Courts Alzheimer's Assisted Living facility where she received care for complications related to Alzheimer's disease.
Mrs. Zulema 'Sue' Thurman was born on December 13, 1921 in San Isidro, Texas to Eliseo and Crisanta Guerra. She attended San Isidro High School. She went on to become a very successful bookkeeper and office manager for many years in McAllen, Texas. She served as the administrator for J.E.T. Ranch - a Brangus cattle ranch that she and her husband, James E. Thurman, Jr. (now deceased) established and operated north of Mission, Texas. A talented artist, Sue loved to paint all facets of life but she especially loved painting and wood burning images of landscapes. Above all else, Sue had a huge, loving and giving heart. As minor examples of this, she took in and raised a foster daughter who she could not have loved more than if she was her own. Sue also helped everyone she came in contact with from family to friends.
It is in Zulema Thurman's name that the Guerra and Thurman families establish this memorial fund with the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at UT Health San Antonio. We believe Sue would have been quite proud to have such a worthwhile fund established in her name. May this fund, however great or small, be significant towards the Barshop Institute's future successes in Alzheimer's research.
