Medical Lab Sciences Department

Medical laboratory scientists provide physicians with information to detect disease or a predisposition to disease, confirm or reject a diagnosis, establish prognosis, guide patient management; and monitor the efficacy of treatment.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as post-baccalaureate certificates. The department graduates between 15 to 35 students each year whose work will, in turn, touch thousands over the span of their professional lives. In our program the first-time pass rate for board certification is nearly 100% and the student faculty to ratio is 12:1.

Most MLS students are self-supporting and often support a family as well. The program has a flexible curriculum that allows students to progress at their own pace. Due to MLS workforce shortages, graduates from our programs have no problems finding jobs and most have positions before they graduate.

By one estimate, 70% of all medical diagnostic and treatment decisions physicians make are based on laboratory results. A multibillion dollar industry in Texas, lab results offer high value at relatively low cost, accounting for only 3.5% of the total healthcare dollars.
