Our School of Medicine has embarked on an ambitious strategic plan that builds excellence in each of our traditional missions: education, research and clinical service.

The educational program in the School of Medicine is multi-faceted and focuses not only on the science of medicine but also on the art of medicine. Our goal is to graduate young physicians who are compassionate, respectful of diversity, advocates for patients, and who have developed skills of life-long learning with the ability to apply current technological advances for the better treatment of their patients.

The School of Medicine has a tradition of excellence in research aimed at producing improvements in human health. To be successful, to grow and to evolve as a top-tier research institution, we invest in our outstanding faculty, encourage collaboration, and recruit the very best and brightest new faculty to join us in maintaining this tradition. Among School of Medicine faculty, there are international leaders in 17 different areas of research focus. Some of these areas include work that has lead to notable advances in the areas of transplantation, cancer, stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

Clinical Care/Community Outreach
The University of Texas Medicine (UT Medicine) is the practice organization for the School of Medicine and is the largest multidisciplinary practice group in South Texas with over 700 licensed clinicians. UT Medicine clinicians practice in six inpatient and eleven outpatient venues with more than 600,000 outpatient visits per year. While not only offering a full spectrum of care from primary care to transplantation services, the faculty also supervises the training of 750 residents.
